[§250] Rev 14:19-20: Wicked Grapes Are Trodden in the Winepress
Revelation 14:19: And the angel thrust in his sickle into the earth, and gathered the vine of the earth, and cast it into the great winepress of the wrath of God.
At the end of the Second Woe, the Fourth Harvest Angel (God the Father) commands the Third Harvest Angel (Christ)1 to thrust in his sickle into the earth‒meaning that which is of the earth or earthly.2 The vine of the earth is an evil vine3 that represents Modern Babylon, which is the Second Beast,4 and wicked people of the earth.5 When Christ gathers the vine of the earth during the Second Woe6 all mortal sons of perdition will die in this first stage of the destructive harvest.7
Mortal sons of perdition are the target of the initial harvest in Revelation chapter 14 because they are beyond saving and they cannot repent.8 Among all the grapes of the vine,9 they are the only people fully ripe in iniquity.10 Some telestial-worthy people will undoubtedly die during this initial harvest of the vine of the earth because they also refuse to repent.11 However, Revelation 9:20-21 specifically states that telestial-worthy people will collectively survive the Second Woe to be destroyed by the Seven Vial Plagues of the Third Woe.12 Thus, only mortal sons of perdition‒speaking collectively‒will be symbolically cast into the great winepress13 of the wrath of God to be tread upon by Christ at the end of the Second Woe.14 Treading grapes in the winepress is a symbol of Christ's judgments upon the wicked.15
Revelation 14:20: And the winepress was trodden without the city, and blood came out of the winepress, even unto the horse bridles, by the space of a thousand and six hundred furlongs.
Christ will symbolically tread the winepress in the Kidron Valley16 located outside the walls of the ancient city of Jerusalem.17 This location is symbolically significant for several reasons. First, Christ will tread upon the wicked outside the city walls where he was once tread upon during his crucifixion.18 Second, even though the winepress is symbolic, the wicked armies of Armageddon will be literally destroyed beginning at the Kidron Valley as the center place for this battle.19 From the Kidron Valley, Christ's destructive judgments will extend outward to embrace all mortal sons of perdition throughout the entire world.20 The prophet Joel recognized this expansive view of the destruction when he prophesied that the winepress will also be tread beyond the Kidron Valley to the valley of Jehoshaphat, which he also called the valley of decision.21 Third, the location of the winepress in the Kidron Valley symbolically suggests that the most wicked are destroyed because they are outside the Holy City while the more righteous are spared within her walls.22
The Second Woe harvest will be a massive slaughter of wicked people23 represented by the bloodshed associated with the battle of Armageddon.24 In this battle, the third part of men will die, who collectively represent all mortal sons of perdition.25 Revelation 14:20 depicts this slaughter with the image of a winepress where sons of perdition will be crushed like grapes as Armageddon comes to a bloody end.26 The blood of the wicked will flow like red juice from out of the winepress.27 Christ alone will tread the grapes that he gathers in the winepress.28 This will symbolically cause his clothes to be stained red with human blood.29
The Second Woe treading of the winepress in Revelation 14:2030 will be a horrific scene of bloodshed31 that will be like a river of human blood32 to the height of the horse bridles.33 The image of a horse is used in this context as a symbol of war, and the image corresponds to the symbolic white horse that Christ rides at the time of the slaughter.34
The immense amount of blood from Armageddon, including the Second Woe harvest, will symbolically spread for the space of a thousand and six hundred furlongs.35 A furlong is about one-eighth of a mile.36 Some scholars believe the 1600 furlongs (184 miles) represent the length of modern Palestine.37 However, the 1600 furlongs is a symbolic number of superlative proportion38 that represents the worldwide destruction of all mortal sons of perdition.39 This conclusion follows from the mathematical calculations that lead to the symbolic 1600. This number is equal to the square of the world number four (4), which represents geographical completeness. The number 16 (4x4=16) is then multiplied by the square of ten (10x10=1000). The number ten (10) represents one part of an entire whole.40 From these calculations, the symbolic 1600 (4x4x10x10=1600) represents Christ's worldwide harvest of mortal sons of perdition as one part of the whole of all wicked people.41 Telestial people are the other part of the wicked whole not targeted by the Second Woe harvest.42
