[§234] The 144,000 Are Kings, Priests and Saviors on Mt. Zion

144,000 exaltation-worthy saints will stand with Christ on mount Zion in heaven at the end of the Second Woe before Christ's first appearance of the Second Coming at earthly mount Zion in New Jerusalem.1 The 144,000 number is a symbolic figure that represents a great multitude2 of kings and priests3 whom God has and will raise up from all generations4 and from all nations of the earth.5 As of the end of the Second Woe, the 1440,000 Servants will include the following groups of people:

  1. Living people whose calling and election is made sure6 and who will be transfigured, translated, or resurrected to stand with Christ in the flesh on mount Zion.7 Exaltation-worthy people who stand with Christ on mount Zion in a translated and/or transfigured condition can receive the sealing ordinance after the Second Coming if they have not already been sealed before the end of the Second Woe.
  2. All the dead who were resurrected with Christ to an exalted state in the meridian of time.8
  3. The disembodied spirits of just men made perfect since the meridian of time9 whose graves will be opened for their resurrection in the morning of the first resurrection10 so they can be caught up to stand in the flesh with Christ on mount Zion.11
  4. The Lost Ten Tribes of Israel in their translated condition.12

The foregoing kings and priests in all four groups, including their wives as queens and priestesses,13 qualify for exaltation and Godhood.14 They are and will become members of the Church of the Firstborn.15 Each will rule and reign over their kingdom16 in the house of Israel17 with power and dominion18 based on their lineage.19 They will also rule with Christ on earth during the millennium and then forever according to the patriarchal pattern of God's government in heaven.20

The 144,000 Servants that come up21 to stand with Christ on mount Zion function as saviors on mount Zion.22 In that capacity, they bring23 (save)24 as many people as they can to the Church of the Firstborn.25 They do so now by performing vicarious ordinances for the dead in the temple,26 among other things.27 The 144,000 Servants that live during the latter days will perform this temple work primarily during the period of the sixth seal28 and start of the seventh seal before the gathering of saints at Adam-ondi-Ahman.29 Elder Orson Pratt said, "the great object of building Temples in this dispensation ... is to effect the accomplishment of the very work of organization that must be completed by the time the Ancient of days [Adam]30 shall come."31

When the saints of all ages gather to Adam-ondi-Ahman, the Patriarchal Order of the Priesthood will be organized to prepare for the coming of Christ's millennial kingdom.32 The prophet Daniel saw this latter-day gathering in Daniel 7:10, and said that "thousand thousands ministered unto [Adam], and ten thousand times ten thousand stood before him."33 The thousand thousands‒or one million‒ministers from Daniel's vision are the 144,000 Servants from John's vision.34 The larger group of ten thousand times ten thousand‒or 100 million people‒from Daniel's vision is the general assembly of saints worthy of the celestial kingdom, but not exaltation in the highest heaven.35

The gathering at Adam-ondi-Ahman will occur at the midpoint of Armageddon, just 3½ years before the Second Coming.36 This coincides with the start of the Great Tribulation,37 when temple worship will be seriously curtailed as Armageddon becomes a worldwide conflict.38 The New Jerusalem in Zion39 will be the only place not at war and the saints in Zion will stand in holy places and will not be moved.40 Based on the conditions that will be present during the Great Tribulation, there is a great urgency to complete as much temple work for the 144,000 Servants as possible before the gathering at Adam-ondi-Ahman.41 People that do not have the seal of the living God in their forehead by the end of the Second Woe (Armageddon)42 will not be numbered among the 144,000 Servants at that time.43 This means they will not be able to stand in the flesh with Christ on heavenly mount Zion at the end of the Second Woe.44

Deceased people that do not have their exalting ordinances completed by the end of the Second Woe cannot stand with Christ on mount Zion because they cannot be resurrected until their temple ordinances are complete.45 This does not mean that exaltation-worthy people lose their right to exaltation, however. Their exalting ordinances can and will be performed for them by proxy during the millennium.46 Translated and transfigured persons that stand on mount Zion, including the Lost Ten Tribes, will receive their temple sealings as living ordinances after the Second Coming.47
