[§233] Rev 14:1: The Lamb Stands on Mount Zion with 144,000
Revelation 14:1: And I looked, and, lo, a Lamb stood on the mount Sion, and with him an hundred forty and four thousand, having his Father's name written in their foreheads.
In Revelation 13:13-18, John saw the great latter-day wickedness that exists in the world today and more particularly during the time of the Great Tribulation just before the Second Coming. He saw, for example, wicked people that are‒and will be‒sufficiently wicked to have the name of the Second Beast (666) figuratively imprinted on their right hand or on their forehead.1 This latter-day wickedness will reach a climax during the last 3½ years of Physical Armageddon before the Second Coming.2 This 3½-year period of the Great Tribulation3 coincides in time with the second half of the Second Woe (Physical Armageddon).4 The end of the Great Tribulation‒and end of the Second Woe‒is the setting and time frame for John's vision in Revelation chapter 14.
In Revelation 14:1, John looked and saw a new vision5 that is juxtaposed to the vision of wickedness and the Second Beast that John saw at the end of Revelation chapter 13.6 In this new vision, John saw the 144,000 Servants of God who were sealed in their forehead from Revelation 7:4-8.7 John saw these 144,000 Servants standing with Christ on mount Sion in heaven at the end of the Second Woe.8 This vision provides another message of hope for righteous saints who will be redeemed after they endure tribulation,9 particularly those saints of the latter days who will live during the Great Tribulation.10
John's new vision begins with the image of a Lamb that represents Jesus Christ.11 The Lamb stands12 on mount Sion (Zion)13 to symbolize Christ's forthcoming victory14 over the Second Beast at the Second Coming.15 The defeated Second Beast is a vast and worldwide collection of false churches, secular institutions, and worldly governments that have two horns like an innocent and goodly lamb, but they speak like a deadly dragon (Satan).16
The word Zion has several latter-day meanings17 depending on the context.18 For example, Zion refers to the earthly city of New Jerusalem that will be built in Independence, Missouri.19 This is where Christ will make his first appearance of the Second Coming.20 Members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints will begin construction of New Jerusalem and her temple in Independence21 after the gathering of saints at Adam-ondi-Ahman and during the 3½ years of the Great Tribulation.22 This earthly Zion will merge with mount Sion in heaven at the time of the Second Coming.23
In Revelation 14:1, mount Sion refers to Zion in heaven where the Lamb will stand with the 144,000 Servants for his marriage to them as members of the Church of the Firstborn. This marriage or union will occur before Zion descends at the Second Coming to celebrate the marriage supper at New Jerusalem.24 John provides the details of these marriage events in Revelation 19:7-9.
In Revelation 14:1-5, the exaltation-worthy saints on mount Sion rejoice in heaven for their marriage to the Lamb. This will occur at the end of the Second Woe after all exaltation-worthy saints are caught up to meet with, and become part of, the 144,000 Servants on mount Sion in heaven.25 Revelation 14:6-20 uses the imagery of seven angels to symbolically describe how the merger of earthly Zion with heavenly mount Sion will occur at the end of the Second Woe.26
The gathering of exaltation-worthy saints for their marriage on heavenly mount Sion will begin with the resurrection of the Two Witnesses in Jerusalem, just 3½ days after their deaths.27 They will be the first to resurrected when the morning of the first resurrection resumes at the end of the Second Woe.28 At that time, all deceased exaltation-worthy saints that have died since the resurrection of Christ and have also been sealed in the temple will come forth from their graves. They will stand with Christ on heavenly mount Sion in their resurrected condition.29 All exaltation-worthy saints still living at the end of the Second Woe, including residents of earthly Zion, will also be quickened and taken up to stand with Christ on heavenly mount Sion.30 Some of these living saints will be resurrected in the twinkling of an eye (cf. Doctrine and Covenants 63:51), while others will be transfigured or translated.31 These living saints will also be joined by the exalted saints that were resurrected with Christ in the meridian of time, including people from the City of Enoch.32 The Lost Ten Tribes will also stand with Christ on heavenly mount Sion in their translated condition prior to their resurrection that won't take place until after the Second Coming.33 In short, everyone that stands with Christ on heavenly mount Sion in Revelation 14:1 will be exaltation-worthy saints that have lived upon the earth prior to the Second Coming. They will all stand with Christ in the flesh, whether they are quickened, translated, transfigured, or resurrected.34
Deceased saints that are exaltation-worthy, but who are disembodied spirits still waiting to receive their exalting temple ordinances, will not stand with Christ on heavenly mount Sion in the flesh at the Second Coming. They cannot be resurrected from their graves to stand with Christ in the flesh because they must first receive their vicarious exalting ordinances by proxy.35 This is why a great urgency exists today to complete the temple ordinances for all exaltation-worthy saints during the current period of the sixth seal and start of the seventh seal. This vicarious work will allow them to stand in the flesh with Christ upon mount Sion at the Second Coming as is their right.36
All exaltation-worthy saints that stand with Christ in the flesh on mount Sion are numbered among the 144,000 Servants37 and they have the Father's name written in their foreheads.38 This is the same group John identified in Revelation 7:4-8, except their number continues to grow as exalting ordinances are performed for both the living and the dead during the sixth seal and continuing until the end of the Second Woe.39 Many Greek manuscripts say that these 144,000 Servants also have the name of the Lamb written on their foreheads.40 The symbolic name(s) written in their foreheads signify that the 144,000 Servants are sealed up to exaltation and eternal life.41 They are mirror opposites of the wicked people that have the name and number of 666 for the Second Beast symbolically imprinted on their right hand or on their forehead.42
Revelation 7:4-8 describes the sealing process of the 144,000 Servants, for both the living and the dead.43 This process has already begun with increasing urgency in the many latter-day temples of the sixth seal.44 The temple work needed for this sealing process must continue with even greater urgency until the Second Coming because all 144,000 Servants must have the ordinances associated with the seal of the living God before the Second Coming if they are to stand with Christ in the flesh on mount Sion.45 This includes the sealing of all exaltation-worthy saints who live and die during the time of the Great Tribulation.46
