[§238] Rev 14:4-5: The 144,000 Are Redeemed as the First Fruits
Revelation 14:4: These are they which were not defiled with women; for they are virgins. These are they which follow the Lamb whithersoever he goeth. These were redeemed from among men, being the firstfruits unto God and to the Lamb.
Revelation 14:4 refers to the 144,000 Servants that stand with the Lamb on mount Zion (Sion) in heaven at the end of the Second Woe.1 They are worthy to stand with Christ because they were not defiled with women2 and they are virgins.3 This symbolic imagery4 means that these exaltation-worthy men and women are pure and faithful in their covenant relationship with Jesus Christ,5 not that they are or were celibate in mortality.6 Those that worship the image of the First Beast,7 by contrast, are unfaithful idolaters.8 They spiritually defile themselves with the mother of harlots, which is also the Great Whore of false religion.9
The 144,000 Servants follow the Lamb whithersoever he goeth,10 as devoted sheep follow the good shepherd.11 Since they follow Christ in tribulation during mortality, they will follow him in glory at the Second Coming.12
The 144,000 Servants overcome all things13 and stand on heavenly mount Zion redeemed from among men‒meaning they are resurrected and redeemed from mortal corruption and sin.14 Their number symbolizes the entire membership of redeemed people in the Church of the Firstborn.15 They will be the firstfruits unto God and to the Lamb.16 This means they will be resurrected to an exalted state when the morning of the first resurrection resumes17 with the Two Witnesses in Jerusalem at the end of the Second Woe.18 The 144,000 Servants will stand with Christ in the flesh on heavenly mount Zion in their transfigured, translated, or resurrected condition19 and then descend with him in glory during Christ's three separate appearances of the Second Coming.20
Revelation 14:5: And in their mouth was found no guile: for they are without fault before the throne of God.
The 144,000 Servants will have no guile, which means deceit or cunning21 in their mouth.22 They do not engage in hypocrisy23 or the worship of false idols.24 Their whole bodies will be filled with light and truth.25 They proclaim truth26 as the Savior did.27 They are true and without fault, having overcome all trials and tribulation.28
Some versions of the Bible omit the words before the throne of God in Revelation 14:529 This omission clarifies that the 144,000 stand on mount Zion as resurrected persons rather than the disembodied spirits that stood before the throne of God in celestial paradise in Revelation chapters 4 and 5. Ultimately, it makes no difference whether the image of the throne is present or not. The essential message is that the 144,000 Servants are made blameless30 through Christ's atonement.31 They stand perfected and resurrected on heavenly mount Zion in the presence of both God and his Christ.32
