[§146] Rev 10:1: Christ Is the Mighty Angel from Heaven

Revelation 10:1: And I saw another mighty angel come down from heaven, clothed with a cloud: and a rainbow was upon his head, and his face was as it were the sun, and his feet as pillars of fire:

Revelation chapter 10 describes events that are contemporaneous with John's vision of Armageddon in Revelation 9:13-21.1 In this continuing and more detailed vision, John saw another mighty angel come down from heaven.2 This mighty (strong) angel3 is Jesus Christ,4 although some believe this angel is Michael.5 The collection of images indicate that John saw Christ come down from heaven at the midpoint of Armageddon to attend the earthly gathering of saints at Adam-ondi-Ahman.6 Christ's glory and majesty are depicted,7 which correspond with his earthly coronation as King of kings and Lord of lords when he appears at Adam-ondi-Ahman.8 Christ will descend from heaven with the light of the morning star9 and the day star10 to dissipate the darkness of Satan's earthly dominion up to that point. Satan's evil dominion will diminish as Christ reclaims his righteous dominion on earth.11 In Revelation 9:1, Satan is depicted as a fallen star from heaven whose dominion of darkness on earth will endure until overpowered by the light of Christ's earthly kingdom that will be established at Adam-ondi-Ahman.12

In Revelation 10:1, Christ is clothed with a cloud13 to symbolize his divine presence during the gathering at Adam-ondi-Ahman.14 Throughout the Old Testament, Christ (Jehovah)15 frequently manifested himself in a cloud.16 Three and a half (3½) years after the gathering at Adam-ondi-Ahman,17 Christ will come in clouds of glory at his Second Coming.18

The image of a rainbow upon his head is similar to the image of, and may actually be, the emerald rainbow described in Revelation 4:3 from John's vision of celestial paradise.19 In Revelation 10:1, the rainbow of heaven represents God's continuing covenant of peace and divine mercy toward his saints,20 even as they endure the tribulations and judgments of Armageddon all around them.21 Just as the physical sun makes real rainbows appear in the midst of stormy weather,22 the Sun (S-u-n) of righteousness will appear during the midst of Armageddon with healing in his wings.23 The symbolic rainbow he brings to Adam-ondi-Ahman assures peace and protection to the worthy people of Zion, including the 144,000 Servants that have the seal of the Living God in their forehead.24

The rainbow first became a token of Jehovah's covenant of divine favor after the flood in the days of Noah.25 Massive destruction will occur at the Second Coming as it did in the days of Noah. However, this future destruction will only occur in the year that the rainbow no longer appears in the sky as a sign of God's mercy.26

At Adam-ondi-Ahman, as on other occasions, Christ's face will shine like the sun.27 This is a sign of his glory28 and also his power. Doctrine and Covenants Section 88:7 states that "[Christ] is in the sun, and the light of the sun, and the power thereof by which it was made."29 Therefore, the sunlit face of the mighty angel symbolizes Christ's law and governing power.30 These he will exercise as Zion is redeemed after the gathering of saints at Adam-ondi-Ahman.31

Christ's feet are as pillars of fire.32 The pillars of fire further describe his glory.33 His feet represent dominion over the object on which his feet stand.34 At Adam-ondi-Ahman, tens of thousands of thousands of saints from all ages will worship at the feet of Jesus Christ.35 His feet of fiery pillars will safely guide Latter-day Saints to redeem the promised land in Zion after the gathering at Adam-ondi-Ahman,36 just as ancient Israel was led by a pillar of fire during their exodus in the wilderness to the promised land.37 Christ's fiery feet will also tread down the wicked at the Second Coming.38
