[§132] Satan’s Earthly Dominion Until Adam-ondi-Ahman
In Daniel chapter 2, the prophet Daniel interpreted King Nebuchadnezzar's dream concerning the political kingdoms of the earth from the time of ancient Babylon to the end of the world.1 Forty-eight years later,2 Daniel had a vision of Satan's spiritual dominion in the same kingdoms from the time of ancient Babylon until the future gathering of saints at Adam-ondi-Ahman.3 Daniel's detailed vision of Satan's growing dominion and spiritual kingdoms on earth can be found in Daniel chapter 7.4
In Daniel chapter 7, Satan's growing dominion starts with the image of a lion that represents Satan's dominion in ancient Babylon beginning in 612 BC, when the Babylonians defeated Assyria.5 Even though Babylon has become a type for evil and wickedness in the last days, Satan's power and dominion actually grew stronger in the next three ancient kingdoms after ancient Babylon.6 The next three kingdoms include Satan's dominion in the Medo-Persian Empire from 538 to 332 BC, which is represented by a bear;7 Satan's dominion in the Macedonian or Greek Empire from 332 to 161 BC,8 which is represented by a leopard; and Satan's dominion in the Roman Empire from 161 to about 483 AD, which is represented by a dreadful beast.9 The Roman Empire fell in approximately 476 AD10 and this gave rise to the ten horns on the dreadful beast that represent Satan's dominion in the modern nations that emerged when the Roman Empire fell and thereafter.11 Daniel also saw one horn emerge from among the ten horns of the modern nations to become Satan's greatest dominion. This one horn represents the emergence of Satan's dominion in the modern age at the same time Jesus Christ restored the kingdom of God on earth through the Prophet Joseph Smith beginning in 1820.12
Daniel 7:9 confirms that Satan's dominion in the worldly kingdoms of the earth will continue to grow until Satan's thrones are cast down, and the Ancient of days sits13 at the future gathering of saints at Adam-ondi-Ahman.14 At that future day, exaltation-worthy saints will attend the gathering as kings and queens and will have their thrones established as such.15 The foundation for these future thrones was first laid at the ancient gathering of saints at Adam-ondi-Ahman when Adam's righteous posterity received their exalting temple ordinances just three years before Adam's death.16
Daniel's vision of the future gathering at Adam-ondi-Ahman begins with the image of "the four winds of the heaven [that] strove upon the great sea."17 The four winds represent the geographically complete or universal power of God.18 God's unseen power controls the destiny of all nations,19 even when those nations appear to be uncontrollably in commotion20 as the waves of the sea.21 Daniel's great sea represents the worldliness of wicked nations since the time of ancient Babylon.22 Thus, Satan's dominion in ancient Babylon23 emerged first among the four great beasts24 from a tumultuous sea.25 The fourth dreadful beast emerged from the great sea with ten horns to represent Satan's power and dominion in the modern nations.26 The ten horns are the symbolic equivalent of Satan's power and dominion in Modern Babylon today.27
Using the great sea imagery from Daniel chapter 7, John saw a vision of Modern Babylon which he called the whore of all the earth,28 and she symbolically sits today upon many waters.29 These modern waters of wicked nations and people30 support, and will continue to support, Modern Babylon until she spiritually falls and is cast down when Christ begins to take dominion of the earth at Adam-ondi-Ahman.31 After Modern Babylon falls spiritually at Adam-ondi-Ahman, she will physically fall 3½ years later as the wicked people of the earth are completely destroyed at Christ's Second Coming.32
