[§135] The Leopard: Dominion in the Greek Empire

Alexander the Great1 of the Macedonian (Greek) Empire conquered the Medo-Persian Empire in about 330 BC.2 In Daniel's vision of the four beasts in Daniel chapter 7, he saw Satan's dominion in the Greek Empire as "a leopard, which had upon the back of it four wings of a fowl; the beast had also four heads; and dominion was given to it."3 The four wings on the leopard's back symbolize the speed4 and agility of Alexander's armies.5 Their impressive conquests6 extended from Europe to Egypt, and from all of Asia to India.7 The four heads of the leopard refer to Alexander's four generals8 that divided Alexander's kingdom between themselves after Alexander's unexpected death in 323 BC.9

The Lord gave Alexander power over the wayward and backsliding Jews, just as he gave power to other earthly kingdoms both before and after the Greeks.10 Israelite wickedness led to large-scale deportations and captivity on foreign soil in Egypt,11 Assyria,12 and Babylon.13 Under the more liberal Persian rule,14 the Jews were allowed to practice their religious beliefs in their homeland.15 The Greeks generally continued the liberal religious freedoms and policies of the Persians,16 except for Antiochus Epiphanes (IV) in the second century BC.17

The Greeks also gave their subjects a measure of self-governance through the use of an autonomous city-state18 called the polis.19 These municipalities retained their separateness and heterogenous cultures like the black spots on the body of the leopard in Daniel's vision.20

The Jews enjoyed a large measure of self-governance and religious freedom in the Greek Empire, but they were also subject to Greek influence called Hellenization.21 Hellenized Jews merged into the fabric of the Greek Empire,22 religiously,23 culturally,24 linguistically,25 and in all other material respects.26 Through the Hellenization process Satan's earthly dominion (the leopard)27 grew dramatically in the Greek Empire after Alexander's conquest of the known world.28 The popular Greek government and culture politicized29 and polluted30 the true religion of Jehovah.31 In other words, Hellenization diluted and destroyed religious truths with Greek philosophy,32 moral corruption,33 and secularism.34 In short, the Jews were given greater freedom in the Greek Empire and many used that freedom to forsake the faith of their fathers as the dominion of Satan grew.

Greek influence did not end when the Roman Empire took power from the Greeks.35 The dominion that Satan established in the Greek Empire merged into and became part of the Roman Empire36 and beyond.37 Greek culture essentially laid the foundation for the great and abominable church that emerged later during the Roman Empire.38 The same Satan inspired philosophies that were part of his Hellenistic dominion in the Greek Empire became part of the fabric of the Roman Empire and they have become an integral part of the kingdom of the devil39 and kingdom of evil40 in today's modern society.41
