[§279] Rev 16:21: An Exceedingly Great Hail Falls on Men
Revelation 16:21: And there fell upon men a great hail out of heaven, every stone about the weight of a talent: and men blasphemed God because of the plague of the hail; for the plague thereof was exceeding great.
During the seventh Vial Plague of the Third Woe,1 a great hail out of heaven will fall2 as a divine judgment3 upon all wicked men that still remain on earth.4 John mentions the same hailstorm in Revelation 11:19, when he briefly introduced the Third Woe.5 This final hailstorm is foreshadowed by‒and is much more severe than‒the hailstorm that will destroy crops when the first trumpet angel of the seventh seal sounds in Revelation 8:7.6
The hailstorm of the seventh Vial Plague mirrors the seventh plague in Egypt,7 except the Vial Plague will be much worse.8 The Lord carried out the Egyptian plague with surgical precision so that the Israelites in Goshen were not injured.9 The Lord will use the same surgical precision against the wicked at the Second Coming.10
The Egyptian plague also included hail mingled with fire.11 John does not mention fire with the hail in his vision of the seventh Vial Plague.12 Nevertheless, Ezekiel saw the same hailstorm and he said the hail will be mingled with fire in the likeness of Sodom and Gomorrah.13 Based on these foreshadows, it's likely that fire will be present with the hail, perhaps as a continuation of the fire from the fourth Vial Plague in Revelation16:8-9.14 There will also be fire from the glory of Christ's person at his Second Coming.15
In this final hailstorm at the Second Coming, every stone [will be] about the weight of a talent.16 Among the Jews in the New Testament, a talent weighed about 100 pounds or more.17 The weight of the hailstones is a measure of how exceeding great this plague will be.18 The large hailstones will destroy remaining telestial people in the world that worship the Second Beast,19 including all people that do not minimally qualify for the terrestrial kingdom.20
The telestial people afflicted by the plague of hail will remain unrepentant,21 and will blaspheme God because of the plague.22 That is, they will curse God and die as modern scriptures attest in Doctrine and Covenants Section 45:32.23 The large hailstones of the seventh Vial Plague are the literal antitype for the ancient practice of stoning people under the Mosaic law when they blasphemed the name of God.24
And there came one of the seven angels which had the seven vials, and talked with me, saying unto me, Come hither; I will shew unto thee the judgment of the great whore that sitteth upon many waters.
