[§277] Rev 16:19: Jerusalem Divides and Cities of Nations Fall
Revelation 16:19: And the great city was divided into three parts, and the cities of the nations fell: and great Babylon came in remembrance before God, to give unto her the cup of the wine of the fierceness of his wrath.
When the greatest earthquake in history reshapes the continents into a single landmass during the seventh Vial Plague,1 the great city of Jerusalem2 will be physically divided into three parts. This will occur as the mount of Olives cleaves in the midst to form an east-to-west valley through the mount.3 Zechariah adds significant detail to this Messianic event4 and also Ezekiel.5 These prophets said that the great earthquake of the seventh Vial Plague will cause a literal fountain of water to flow from the foundation of the temple in Jerusalem.6 The water will flow east through the new valley cut through the mount of Olives towards the Jordan River,7 and also west toward the Mediterranean Sea.8 Other springs will add their water to make this a large river9 that will flow year around.10 The abundance of water will raise the level of the dead sea until it flows into the ocean and becomes a fresh water lake11 with an abundance of fish.12
After the great earthquake, refreshing water will be plentiful in Palestine13 as the earth returns to the paradisaical conditions14 that existed in the Garden of Eden.15 The fountain from the temple in Jerusalem will literally flow with living waters that symbolize Jesus Christ.16 He is the true fountain of living water17 that will give renewed life to the Jews and to all who abide the day of his Second Coming.18
Some scholars believe the great city that divides in Revelation 16:19 is Modern Babylon, rather than the modern city of Jerusalem.19 However, the cities of the nations in this same verse represent Modern Babylon.20 The metaphorical city of Modern Babylon will be physically destroyed,21 not merely divided.22 The cities of the nations destroyed worldwide at Christ's Second Coming are foreshadowed by the wicked cities destroyed on the American continent at the time of Christ's death.23
When the earth's topography is reshaped at the Second Coming, Jesus Christ will also reshape the political kingdoms of the earth.24 Thus, the physical destruction of the cities of nations will also be accompanied by the fall or collapse of their earthly governments,25 their economies,26 and their worldliness.27 The details of these destructive events are set forth in Revelation chapters 17 to 19.28
During the seventh Vial Plague, Babylon will come in remembrance before God as death comes to all telestial inhabitants still living in the cities of the nations.29 These telestial inhabitants are those that have the mark of the Second Beast from Revelation 13:11-18.30 The death and physical destruction that will occur during the seventh Vial Plague will flow like deadly poison poured out on wicked people and cities of the nations from the cup of the wine of the fierceness of [God's] wrath.31
