[§272] Rev 16:15: Christ Will Come Suddenly as a Thief
Revelation 16:15: Behold, I come as a thief. Blessed is he that watcheth, and keepeth his garments, lest he walk naked, and they see his shame.
Just before the seventh Vial Plague begins,1 John hears the voice of Jesus Christ say: Behold, I come as a thief.2 Christ's Second Coming will be sudden3 like a thief in the night.4 However, those with the spirit of inspiration5 will recognize his approach by the signs of the times,6 including the great earthquake at the end of the sixth seal in Revelation 6:12, the plagues of the seven trumpet angels that begin the events of the seventh seal in Revelation chapter 8, the First Woe in Revelation 9:1-12, Physical Armageddon in Revelation 9:13-21, and the ministry of the Two Witnesses in Revelation 11:1-14.
Blessed is he that watcheth is spoken as a beatitude in Revelation 16:15.7 The blessing applies to spiritually attentive people that watch8 diligently9 for Christ's Second Coming and are therefore prepared.10 The Savior adds that each such person keepeth his garments.11 This imagery alludes to the garments worn by endowed members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints who make temple covenants.12 Faithful and diligent members of the church13 will become blessed members of the Church of the Firstborn as they make and keep their temple covenants.14
People that make but fail to keep their temple covenants will walk naked, and they see his shame.15 This final image alludes to the ancient practice of punishing the temple guards (Levites)16 that fell asleep at their post. The careless guards were beaten, and their clothes were burned, leaving them shamefully naked.17
The timing of this beatitude is remarkable because Christ's Second Coming during the seventh Vial Plague quickly follows the promised blessing. In fact, the utterance of the beatitude occurs as the Second Coming is already proceeding.18 The state of blessedness begins at the end of the Second Woe when the 144,000 Servants stand with Christ on mount Zion19 even before this beatitude is spoken in John's vision.20 Christ's Second Coming appearances on earth then follow. The timing of this beatitude expresses the certainty of the promised blessing for watchful people that keep their garments. It also expresses the certainty of the shame that will come to spiritually naked people that attempt to abide the day without their garments.21
