[§273] Rev 16:16: Spirits Literally Gather to Armageddon for Battle

Revelation 16:16: And he gathered them together into a place called in the Hebrew tongue Armageddon.

During the sixth Vial Plague of the Third Woe,1 the unembodied and disembodied spirits of devils on earth are symbolically identified in Revelation 16:13-14.2 In Revelation 16:13, John described these spirits of devils as three frogs that come out of the mouths of the Dragon, the Beast, and the False Prophet,3 which means that in Revelation 16:16, they are literally gathered ... together4 by God.5 Many scholars say that these three spirits of devils (frogs) gather mortal armies to Armageddon.6 However, the them gathered in this verse are the spirits of devils themselves, not armies of mortal men and women.7 Mortal armies will gather for the physical battle of Armageddon during the Second Woe, as described by John in Revelation 9:12-18.8 John is not repeating himself. Here, the spirits of devils will gather for the spiritual battle of Armageddon during the sixth Vial Plague to be defeated during the seventh Vial Plague.9

In Revelation 16:16, the spirits of devils gather to a place called in the Hebrew tongue Armageddon,10 which means mountain of destruction (Har Megiddo).11 This has been the site of many notable and decisive battles both ancient12 and modern.13 Some scholars suggest this future mountain of destruction could be mount Carmel,14 where Elijah destroyed the altar and priests of Baal with fire from heaven.15

Since Armageddon is historically the place of decisive battles,16 John may have used the name symbolically as many scholars suggest.17 However, even if John used the name symbolically, there will be an actual battle between the spirits of devils and the heavenly kings of the east in and around Jerusalem.18 Revelation 16:17 states that this battle of spirits will occur during the seventh Vial Plague.19 John describes the symbolic outcome of Spiritual Armageddon in Revelation 19:19-20 where disembodied spirit sons of perdition are cast into the lake of fire and in Revelation 20:1-3 where unembodied spirit sons of perdition are bound in the bottomless pit.20
