[§371] Rev 22:8-9: John Falls Down to Worship His Angelic Guide

Revelation 22:8: And I John saw these things, and heard them. And when I had heard and seen, I fell down to worship before the feet of the angel which shewed me these things.

In Revelation 22:6, an angel confirmed all the sayings in the Book of Revelation.1 In Revelation 22:8, John adds his personal eye-witness testimony to the truth of all the sayings2 as one who both saw these things, and heard them.3 The two testimonies satisfy the law of witnesses.4 These two witnesses establish the truth of the Book of Revelation and all people are thus made accountable for its full content.5

John was overwhelmed as his vision came to a close,6 and he fell down to worship before the feet of the angel that had been John's guide since Revelation 17:1.7 John did the same thing in Revelation 19:10, and was reproved by the angel on that prior occasion.8 John understandably fell down to worship the angel again, however, because the angel in Revelation 22 had just spoken with divine investiture of authority,9 saying, I come quickly, as though he was Jesus Christ.10 John's attempt to worship the angel was misguided,11 but his adoration confirms that John did not doubt the truth of what he had seen and heard from the glorious angel who conveyed his message as though Christ was speaking to him personally.12

Revelation 22:9: Then saith he unto me, See thou do it not: for I am thy fellowservant, and of thy brethren the prophets, and of them which keep the sayings of this book: worship God.

When John fell at the feet of the glorified angel to worship him13 the angel rebuked John a second time,14 saying: I am thy fellowservant, and of thy brethren the prophets.15 This self-description by the angel reveals that he once lived upon this earth.16 Had this been a wicked follower of Satan who appeared as an angel of light, then the so-called angel would have accepted John's adoration and worship.17

The angel further declared that during his lifetime he was also among them which keep the sayings of this book.18 God could not send this angel from his presence to minister on this earth, if the angel had not first qualified himself for exaltation by obedience to the sayings of this book.19 Every other person and servant of God who gains exaltation in the celestial kingdom must do likewise.20

The angel commands John to worship God,21 which means to worship God the Father in the name of Jesus Christ.22 This is the true order of worship on earth23 and it will continue to be the order of worship in heaven among the hierarchy of Gods that will exist in the celestial kingdom.24 In this life, many people ignore this commandment to worship God, and improperly direct their religious adoration toward material goods, substitute idols,25 and saints.26
