[§370] Rev 22:7: Christ Will Come Quickly to Bless the Obedient

Revelation 22:7: Behold, I come quickly: blessed is he that keepeth the sayings of the prophecy of this book.

In the epilogue to the Book of Revelation,1 John's angelic guide authoritatively speaks for Christ in the first person as though he is Christ.2 That is, the angel spoke by divine investiture of authority.3

In Revelation 22:7, the angel‒speaking for Christ‒makes the first of three emphatic announcements that Christ will come quickly.4 Scholars frequently interpret the words I come quickly as a statement about the timing of Christ's Second Coming.5 Christ will be unveiled quickly in all the world when the Second Coming occurs based on God's reckoning of time,6 and it will come all-too-quickly for those who are unprepared.7 However, the three announcements in Revelation 22 have a more short-term and more personal meaning about the unveiling of Jesus Christ. For example, Christ already came quickly to fulfill many ancient prophecies in the Book of Revelation during the time of the seven ancient churches in Asia.8 Christ came, and will come again quickly, to bless those that patiently endure trials and hardships.9 Christ always comes quickly to bless his righteous saints.10 He does so in every watch of the night, which metaphorically represents all gospel dispensations.11 Even the righteous dead are blessed at Christ's Second Coming as though they are still living.12

I come quickly is linked to the sixth of seven beatitudes in the Book of Revelation, which states: Blessed is he that keepeth the sayings of the prophecy of this book.13 This sixth statement of blessedness corresponds to the sixth beatitude in the Sermon on the Mount where Christ promised the pure in heart that they will see God.14 This state of blessedness can occur quickly as the Second Comforter, which means the Father and the Son,15 make their abode16 with those that keepeth17 the sayings of the prophecy18 in the Book of Revelation.19 The sayings include the repeated admonitions in John's letters to the seven ancient churches of Asia.20 The admonitions apply to Christ's latter-day church for the seven ancient churches typify and foreshadow the latter-day church.21 In the former-day and latter-day church, Christ will unveil himself both personally and intimately to those that keep the sayings in the Book of Revelation and they will be blessed with eternal life.22
