[§374] Rev 22:14-15: Blessed Are They That Enter the Celestial City
Revelation 22:14: Blessed are they that do his commandments, that they may have right to the tree of life, and may enter in through the gates into the city.
Revelation 22:14 is the seventh and final beatitude in the Book of Revelation.1 This ultimate statement of blessedness2 applies to those that inherit the earth as exalted saints in the celestial kingdom.3 They are blessed with eternal life based on their obedience4 to the commandments.5
Several well-accepted Bible manuscripts say that the words of this verse should say they that wash their robes, instead of they that do His commandments.6 There is little substantive difference between the two7 because those that keep the commandments will metaphorically have their garments washed white in the blood of the Lamb.8 In both cases, covenant people that are both obedient and cleansed9 have the right to enter in through the gates into the city,10 which represents entry into the celestial kingdom.11 In addition, they will have the right to partake of the tree of life which represents exaltation and eternal life.12
Revelation 22:15: For without are dogs, and sorcerers, and whoremongers, and murderers, and idolaters, and whosoever loveth and maketh a lie.
In contrast to the blessed state of people that enter the celestial city,13 all unworthy people must remain without.14 They remain outside the celestial kingdom15 in an unsaved condition.16 These banished souls include dogs‒an disease-ridden animal in John's day that was also unclean under the Mosaic code.17 This image metaphorically describes morally reprehensible people18 and non-covenant Gentiles generally.19
John describes the people outside the gates as dogs, sorcerers, and whoremongers,20 and murderers, and idolaters, and whosoever loveth and maketh a lie.21 The scriptures usually employ these words to describe wicked people of the telestial kingdom.22 However, this description includes anyone unworthy of the celestial kingdom since this verse excludes from the celestial kingdom seven categories of wicked people universally23 to embrace every kind of unclean person.
