[§320] Rev 19:19: The Beast, the Kings and Their Armies
Revelation 19:19: And I saw the beast, and the kings of the earth and their armies, gathered together to make war against him that sat on the horse, and against his army.
Revelation 19:19 is the starting point for John's description of the spiritual battle of Armageddon.1 In this verse John saw the beast. In this context, the beast is a composite image of all evil spirits‒both unembodied and disembodied‒that have had power on earth since at least 70 AD, when the First Beast rose from the sea (abyss) in Revelation 13:1.2
The kings of the earth in this context are also evil spirits,3 not kings of flesh and blood.4 John calls these disembodied spirits5 the kings of the earth because they first ruled and reigned in Satan's evil kingdom until they became his mortal sons of perdition while they lived on earth.6 When their mortal bodies die‒including the deaths of all mortal sons of perdition at the end of the Second Woe‒their evil spirits live on with great power on earth7 to influence the mortal kings of the earth.8 Isaiah 24:21 distinguishes evil kings in mortality from their evil disembodied spirits, saying that the mortal kings are "kings of the earth upon the earth."9
The disembodied spirit kings of the earth‒those not in the flesh upon the earth‒represent an entire army of evil spirits that will assemble for battle during the Third Woe in Revelation 16.10 They engage in battle against Christ's hosts of heaven during Spiritual Armageddon in Revelation 19:19.11 They are not the 200 million mortal people that fight in the seven-year battle of Physical Armageddon during the Second Woe as recorded in Revelation 9:15-16,12 nor are they the mortal remnant of telestial people that physically survive the Second Woe in Revelation 9:20-21 so that they can be destroyed during the Third Woe in Revelation chapter 19.13
The army of kings of the earth in Revelation 19:19 also include Satan's host of unembodied spirit sons of perdition that have been of the earth‒but not upon the earth to use the words of Isaiah‒since the end of the war in heaven and the physical creation of this earth.14 These unembodied spirits will also gather to Armageddon during the sixth Vial Plague of the Third Woe15 to fight in the spiritual battle of Armageddon in Revelation 19:19.16 Revelation 16:13 separates these armies of evil spirits into three groups,17 as follows:
The first group consists of the unembodied spirit sons of perdition that were cast down to earth with Lucifer (the Dragon)18 when the war in heaven ended and this earth was created.19 These are the spirits of devils that Jesus encountered during his mortal ministry.20 They are still active on earth today,21 and they will be given much greater power and influence on earth during the First Woe of the seventh seal in Revelation 9:1-3.22 Revelation 16:13 identifies the spiritual head of this first group as the Dragon, which is a symbol for Satan.23
The second group consists of mortal sons of perdition that lived and died before the death of Jesus Christ, whose disembodied spirits were held in spirit prison until the time of Christ's resurrection.24 They are represented by the image of the First Beast from Revelation 13:1. These disembodied spirits were released from spirit prison and given great power on earth after the resurrection of Jesus Christ no later than 70 AD.25 Revelation 16:13 identifies the spiritual head of this second group as the Beast, which is a symbol for the disembodied spirit of Cain.26
The third group consists of mortal sons of perdition that die as apostates of the true church of Jesus Christ,27 beginning with Judas Iscariot.28 They are represented by the Second Beast in Revelation 13:11. They were given power on earth when The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints was restored in 1830.29 Christ's true church must be on the earth for these Judas-like apostates30 to conspire against the church and the Lord's true prophet.31 Revelation 16:13 identifies the spiritual head of this third group as the False Prophet, which is a symbol for the disembodied spirit of Judas Iscariot.32
These three groups of evil spirits from Revelation 16:13 give added meaning to the name and number of the Second Beast, which is 666, from Revelation 13:18.33 Six is an imperfect number that describes the imperfection of evil spirits that fall one short of the perfect number seven.34 Since there are three groups of evil spirits active on earth in the latter-day kingdom of the Second Beast, they perfectly correspond to the name of the Second Beast of 6-6-6 given in Revelation 13:18.
During Spiritual Armageddon, the three groups of evil spirits35 will make war36 against him that sat on the horse, and against his army.37 Christ is the warrior on the horse38 and his army is his bride from Revelation 19:7-8.39 The bride of Christ is an army of heavenly hosts40 that include the 144,000 Servants that stand with Christ on mount Zion in Revelation 14:1.41 The 144,000 Servants are also called the righteous kings of the east in Revelation 16:12,42 because they come with Christ from the east at his Second Coming. These kings of the east that come down from heavenly mount Zion to fight in Spiritual Armageddon are the mirror opposite image of the evil spirit kings of the earth in Revelation 19:19.
