[§317] Rev 19:15-16: Christ Conquers the Gathered Nations
Revelation 19:15: And out of his mouth goeth a sharp sword, that with it he should smite the nations: and he shall rule them with a rod of iron: and he treadeth the winepress of the fierceness and wrath of Almighty God.
Physical Armageddon is a seven-year battle that involves mortal men and women, and it will occur primarily during the Second Woe.1 Spiritual Armageddon is a very brief battle between the spirit-hosts of hell and the hosts of heaven that occurs only during the Third Woe.2 Christ will prevail and bring an end to both Physical and Spiritual Armageddon during the seventh Vial Plague of the Third Woe. John describes these distinct battles symbolically, saying, out of his mouth goeth a sharp sword.3 Typically, a sword is drawn in battle from the powerful muscles of the thigh.4 But here, the power of Christ's symbolic sword is in his mouth5 to represent the word of God.6 The Joseph Smith Translation confirms this interpretation by replacing the sharp sword in the King James version with the word of God in JST Revelation 19:15. Thus, Christ will smite the nations; and he will rule them with the word of his mouth.7
In two places, the Book of Revelation refers to the sword from Christ's mouth as a two-edged sword, and modern scriptures use the same imagery.8 A two-edged sword perfectly depicts how Christ will destroy all forms of evil during the seventh Vial Plague with two separate cuts from the same sword.9 One edge of Christ's sword will cut asunder10 all the wicked (telestial) mortals11 during Physical Armageddon at Jerusalem in Revelation 19:15,12 and then throughout the world in Revelation 19:21.13 During Spiritual Armageddon, the other edge of Christ's sword will cut off14 all disembodied sons of perdition in Revelation 19:19-2015 and all unembodied sons of perdition in Revelation 20:1-3.16 The spiritual battle against evil spirits will occur at a place called in the Hebrew tongue Armageddon, the site of many decisive battles in history.17
When Christ uses the sharp sword of his mouth to smite the nations at his Second Coming,18 he will fiercely rule19 over them with a rod of iron.20 The rod of iron symbolizes Christ's severe judgments on the wicked at the Second Coming,21 as distinguished from the rod of his benevolent political rule that will follow during the millennium.22
Christ will physically smite the nations of Gentiles gathered against Jerusalem when the final Abomination of Desolation reaches its climax at that location.23 The final Abomination upon the Jews will occur after the Two Witnesses in Jerusalem are slain by mortal agents of the Second Beast in Revelation 11:7,24 and their sealing powers no longer protect the city.25 The wicked will then go door-to-door for 3½ days committing unspeakable atrocities until half the city is lost.26 At that moment of great horror and despair, Christ will come suddenly as a thief in the night.27 He will stand on the mount of Olives and destroy the destroyers in the area of Jerusalem.28 John uses the symbol of a winepress to depict this destruction, saying that Christ alone29 treadeth the winepress of the fierceness and wrath of Almighty God.30 During this destruction of telestial people during the Third Woe, the blood of the wicked will symbolically pour out like red juice from crushed grapes.31 The same symbolic image describes the destruction of all mortal sons of perdition during the Second Woe in Revelation 14:18-20.32
Revelation 19:16: And he hath on his vesture and on his thigh a name written, KING OF KINGS, AND LORD OF LORDS.
When Christ smites the nations during Physical Armageddon of the Third Woe at Jerusalem, wicked telestial-worthy people will know he is their conqueror33 because he hath a name written on his vesture34 and on his thigh.35 Christ's name is KING OF KINGS, AND LORD OF LORDS, which acknowledges both his political and religious sovereignty.36 This name-title belongs exclusively to Jesus Christ and none other.37 The name appears on his thigh or loins because this is the symbolic place of strength38 and oath making.39 The name will be symbolically conspicuous at the Second Coming to indicate that none will mistake Christ's power and majesty.40
