[§314] Rev 19:11-21: Christ’s Second Coming at the End of Armageddon
This overview section describes the last events of the Second Coming that occur rapidly and in the chronological sequence set forth by John in Revelation 19:11-21. These are the events of the seventh Vial Plague of the Third Woe that follow the marriage supper of the Lamb at New Jerusalem in Independence Missouri.
Christ's Second Coming includes three distinct appearances in successive order.1 Revelation 19:9 describes Christ's first appearance of the Second Coming at New Jerusalem in Zion for the marriage supper of the Lamb. While the marriage feast occurs in the peaceful and protected setting of Zion, the battle of Armageddon will still be ongoing in other parts of the world.2 Christ will make his second appearance of the Second Coming to the beleaguered Jews on the mount of Olives in Old Jerusalem, which will bring an end to Physical Armageddon in that part of the world.3 This will be followed by Christ's third and final Second Coming appearance to the world at large.4 Christ's third appearance of the Second Coming will coincide in time with the end of Physical and Spiritual Armageddon in all the world5 during the seventh and last Vial Plague of the Third Woe.6
The verses in Revelation 19:11-21 symbolically describe the last two appearances of Christ at his Second Coming when he will triumph over all evil.7 In these verses, Christ will physically and spiritually cleanse Old Jerusalem and surrounding areas followed immediately by the cleansing of the earth worldwide.8 As usual, John describes these final events in strict chronological order,9 as follows:
Revelation 19:11-16 describes the end of the physical battle of Armageddon during the Seventh Vial Plague of the Third Woe.10 In these verses, Christ physically destroys wicked (telestial) people who refused to repent during Physical Armageddon, but managed to survive beyond the end of the Second Woe.11 The destruction in these verses will occur in the area of Old Jerusalem, where telestial-worthy people will be destroyed in the winepress of Armageddon.12 This winepress imagery is similar to the winepress mentioned in Revelation 14:18-20. However, the imagery in Revelation chapter 14 describes the destruction of all mortal sons of perdition as a group before the end of the Second Woe.13 In Revelation 19:15, telestial people are the object of destruction in the winepress.
The physical bloodbath of telestial people at the end of the Third Woe will be followed by the supper of the great God in Revelation 19:17-18, when the fowls of the earth will feast on the bodies of the dead.14
Revelation 19:19-20 describes the spiritual battle of Armageddon. In these verse, Christ and the armies of heaven, who are his bride from Revelation 19:7-8,15 will defeat all disembodied spirit sons of perdition then on earth.16 These disembodied spirits are the followers of Cain (the Beast) and Judas Iscariot (the False Prophet), who will be cast alive into the lake of fire burning with brimstone in Revelation 19:20.17
Christ's third appearance of the Second Coming is described in Revelation 19:21, when he will destroy the remnant of wicked (telestial) people in all the earth.18 This is the end of physical Armageddon.
Spiritual Armageddon will end when Satan (the Dragon) and his unembodied spirit sons of perdition are bound in the bottomless pit for 1000 years in Revelation 20:1-3.19 This is the last event of the Second Coming.
