[§204] Rev 12:8-9: Lucifer Prevailed Not and Was Cast Out

Revelation 12:8: And prevailed not; neither was their place found any more in heaven.

Revelation 12:8 is a pivotal verse, where John saw Lucifer's defeat during the war in heaven as a foreshadow of Satan's defeat during the future war of Armageddon on earth.1 Lucifer's defeat in heaven is another sign or likeness of things on earth.2 Even though Lucifer and his angels prevailed not in the war in heaven, they were not completely defeated.3 They were instead cast out of heaven4 to continue their war on earth.5 Similarly, Lucifer and his angels will not be completely defeated at Christ's Second Coming, but will instead be cast down and bound in the bottomless pit during the millennium.6 Christ will then reign on earth during the millennium in the paradisaical conditions of righteousness, peace, and rest.7 Christ's millennial reign is the antitype of Christ's reign on Kolob8 after the war in heaven. After the premortal war, conditions of righteousness, peace, and rest were restored when Lucifer and his angels were cast down.9 The Dragon (Lucifer)10 and his rebellious angels11 prevailed not during the war in heaven12 because light and truth did.13

By the time their place [was no longer] found any more in heaven, most of Lucifer's rebellious followers from the grand council14 had already been cast out of heaven (Kolob).15 Groups of rebellious spirits were cast down to countless other physical worlds which Christ continually organized during the war in heaven.16 The war in heaven finally ended as a war of attrition when Lucifer and his last remaining followers were cast down to this last physical earth organized by Christ in this generation.17

The Joseph Smith Translation of Revelation 12:7 adds significant detail to the King James Version of Revelation 12:8, saying, "the dragon prevailed not against Michael, neither the child, nor the woman which was the church of God, who had been delivered of her pains, and brought forth the kingdom of our God and his Christ."18 Michael is the name of the premortal spirit known as Adam‒the first man on this physical earth.19 The child refers to the man child from Revelation 12:5. This symbolic image represents the premortal Jehovah who was elevated to the status of God during the grand council in heaven.20 The woman is self-described as the premortal church of God in the Joseph Smith Translation of Revelation 12:7.21 She metaphorically gave birth to Jehovah as creator, Redeemer and God when he was accepted as such by the voice of the premortal church during the grand council.22

Revelation 12:9: And the great dragon was cast out, that old serpent, called the Devil, and Satan, which deceiveth the whole world: he was cast out into the earth, and his angels were cast out with him.

When the war in heaven ended, the great dragon was cast out. The dragon refers to the premortal spirit called Lucifer.23 He was personally cast out of heaven (Kolob) onto this physical earth.24 John calls Lucifer the old serpent25 because he deceived Eve by the mouth of the serpent in the Garden of Eden.26 John also calls him the Devil, which means accuser and slanderer in Greek.27 The Devil is also a title that collectively refers to any of Lucifer's fallen angels and satanic agents.28 Lucifer is frequently identified with the Hebrew name of Satan, which also means accuser and adversary.29 He is also called perdition,30 which means utter destruction or eternally lost.31 Lucifer's followers are called sons of perdition,32 because they serve perdition33 and he is their spiritual father.34 These and other names or titles for Lucifer35 identify him as the one who was cast down when the war in heaven ended and he deceiveth the whole world.36

Lucifer was literally cast out of heaven and down to this physical earth37 with all his followers that were still on Kolob when the war in heaven ended.38 The terms cast out and cast down are used synonymously to describe their forced removal from heaven (Kolob) to earth.39 Both terms indicate that Lucifer and his angels were subject to a partial judgment,40 pending their final judgment at the end of the earth.41 To be cast out is equivalent to excommunication and a complete loss of blessings.42 Their loss included a cursed and miserable life on this earth43 as unembodied spirits without physical bodies.44 They were also cast down.45 This describes their fallen condition46 or low state of existence47 due to their complete banishment from heaven48 and God's presence.49 Lucifer and his fallen angels were cast out and cast down as unembodied and unseen spirits50 to dwell51 on this physical earth where they tempt mankind to fulfill God's purpose.52
