[§72] The New and Everlasting Covenant of Marriage
The seal of the living God mentioned in Revelation 7:2 includes the Abrahamic Covenant,1 which is called the new and everlasting covenant of marriage.2 The Abrahamic Covenant is the fulness of the restored gospel of Jesus Christ,3 including all gospel ordinances4 beginning with baptism5 and ending with the sealing ordinance,6 which is often called eternal marriage.7 The sealing ordinance unites couples and families for time and eternity.8 To be exalted in the highest degree of glory in the celestial kingdom,9 men and women must be sealed as husbands and wives10 in the temple11 and symbolically receive the seal of the living God in their foreheads.12 The temple sealing ordinance is the gateway ordinance for men and women to be exalted as kings and queens13 in the highest degree of glory in the celestial kingdom.14 In that exalted state they become Gods15 with the power of eternal increase.16
When husbands and wives are worthily sealed in the temple,17 they enter the Patriarchal Order of the Priesthood.18 This priesthood order existed in the premortal spirit world,19 and it is perpetuated on earth20 when husbands and wives are sealed in the temple.21 The sealing ordinance has the effect of sealing,22 welding,23 or linking God's worthy children24 together into one great family25 in all their earthly26 and heavenly generations.27 Children born to husbands and wives that have been sealed in the temple are said to be born in the covenant.28 These children receive all the blessings and spiritual protections29 of the Abrahamic Covenant30 based on their personal faithfulness.31 Children that are not born in the covenant can be sealed to their parents through the ordinance of adoption.32 In this way the sealing ordinance perpetuates the Patriarchal Order of the Priesthood among all sealed persons through all generations of time and eternity.33 The Patriarchal Order will be the governing organization of God's kingdom in the millennium,34 in the celestial kingdom,35 and throughout the eternities beyond.36
Husbands, wives, and family members that do not receive the sealing ordinance may qualify to enter the celestial kingdom,37 but they will do so as unmarried individuals without family link.38 They will not be exalted in the highest degree of celestial glory.39 Baptism is the gateway ordinance40 to enter the lowest degree of glory in the celestial kingdom.41 Baptism is not required for entry into the terrestrial and telestial kingdoms.42 Accountable persons that have died without an opportunity to accept the gospel can still be heirs of the celestial kingdom,43 but they must accept the gospel in the spirit world and then vicariously receive baptism and confirmation by proxy.44 In addition, they must be vicariously sealed to a spouse to be exalted in the celestial kingdom.45
Unaccountable people in this life can enter the celestial kingdom when they are resurrected without the baptismal ordinance.46 This includes those that die before the age of eight47 and those with mental or other disabilities that limit their agency48 in this life.49 Through the mercy and atonement of Jesus Christ,50 unaccountable persons can also be exalted without baptism.51 However, all unaccountable and unbaptized persons spoken of here must still receive the sealing ordinance by proxy to qualify for exaltation.52
