[§74] The Calling and Election of Saints Made Sure
Exaltation-worthy men and women (i.e., the 144,000 Servants in John's vision)1 receive the seal of the living God as they receive the temple sealing ordinance2 and also have their calling and election made sure.3 This calling and election begins as a conditional promise of exaltation that many people received in the premortal existence.4 That same conditional promise is made again when worthy people receive their exalting ordinances in a temple of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.5
When a conditional promise of exaltation becomes unconditional through righteousness,6 then a person's calling and election is said to be made sure.7 The unconditional promise is ratified by the Holy Ghost, acting in his capacity as the Holy Spirit of Promise.8 Saints that have their calling and election made sure receive the more sure word of prophecy,9 which is a confirmatory revelation that a person's calling and election has been made sure.10 Such persons are guaranteed exaltation11 in the celestial kingdom.12 They become members of the Church of the Firstborn,13 which consists of exaltation-worthy saints within the larger group of celestial-worthy (but unexalted) saints called the general assembly.14
Those that have their calling and election made sure are sometimes called heirs of salvation.15 This name, however, is often applied more generally to all people saved in any kingdom of glory, including the terrestrial and telestial kingdoms.16
