[§67] The Four Angels Commit the Keys of the Kingdom
Doctrine and Covenants Section 77:8 prophetically explains that the four angels from Revelation 7:1 "have the everlasting gospel to commit to every nation, kindred, tongue, and people."1 D&C section 133:36-37 further explain what it means to commit the gospel to all the world. In this revelation from 1831, the Lord speaks in the past tense in verse 36, saying: "I have sent forth mine angel flying through the midst of heaven, having the everlasting gospel, who hath appeared unto some and hath committed it unto man."2 This language is similar to Revelation 14:6, which alludes to the restorative mission of the angel Moroni.3 The words may also include other angels such as John the Baptist and the ancient apostles, Peter, James, and John, who restored the priesthood to the earth in 1829.4
In the next verse of section 133 (i.e., verse 37), the Lord speaks in the future tense, saying: "And this gospel shall be preached unto every nation, and kindred, and tongue, and people."5 The commitment of the gospel is synonymous with the conferral of priesthood keys (past tense in 1831),6 while the preaching of the gospel (future tense) proceeds from the prior commitment of those keys.7
Doctrine and Covenants Section 65:2 uses similar language, saying: "The keys of the kingdom of God are committed unto man on the earth, and from thence shall the gospel roll forth unto the ends of the earth."8 From thence refers to the priesthood keys committed to mankind on the earth.9 Therefore, the gospel shall roll forth from, and at the direction of,10 those to whom the keys of the kingdom have been committed.11
On April 3, 1836, Moses, Elias, and Elijah came to the Kirtland temple and committed to mankind on earth the last priesthood keys for the fulness of the gospel.12 These keys are now held by13 the First Presidency and Quorum of the Twelve Apostles in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.14 The world has largely ignored and overlooked the commitment of these last priesthood keys, as well as the restoration of the priesthood in 1829.15 Nevertheless, the 1829 commitment of all priesthood power to Joseph Smith and Oliver Cowdery by John the Baptist, and then by Peter, James, and John completely fulfills John's vision of the sixth seal wherein he saw four angels having the everlasting gospel to commit to every nation, kindred, tongue, and people.16 With the commitment of the priesthood and all priesthood keys during the sixth seal, the fulness of the gospel17 is now rolling forth from thence to the ends of the earth.18
