[§346] The Resurrection of Mortal Sons of Perdition
After Satan and his unembodied sons of perdition are cast into the lake of fire in Revelation 20:10,1 and before the earth dies in Revelation 20:11,2 all people who become sons of perdition during their mortal lives3 will be resurrected.4 Mortal people can qualify to become sons of perdition in several ways. For example, mortal sons of perdition are those in Doctrine and Covenants (D&C) Section 76:43 that "deny the Son after the Father has revealed him," as was the case with Judas Iscariot.5 Mortal sons of perdition are also those who receive the gospel through baptism and have a testimony of Jesus Christ by and through the gift and power of the Holy Ghost, and then apostatize from that truth and deny God's power.6 Additionally, those that crucify to themselves the Son of God afresh, and put him to an open shame will also become sons of perdition as stated in Hebrews 6:4-6.7 In short, sons of perdition are enemies of Christ and his kingdom and they actively advocate against God's kingdom by their words and actions.8 This is not a list of everything that must be done to qualify people to become mortal sons of perdition. Furthermore, any one of the items in this illustrative list is sufficient to qualify a person to become a son of perdition when that person has an unrepentant and rebellious attitude.
Many mortal sons of perdition have lived and died on the earth,9 beginning with Cain.10 Many more will live and die in the last days before the Second Coming, and again during the little season after the millennium.11 All mortal sons of perdition will be resurrected,12 but none will be redeemed to a kingdom of glory.13 When mortal sons of perdition die in any age of the earth, their disembodied spirits are temporarily cast into their own place14 of outer darkness in the postmortal spirit world.15 Repentance for them in the spirit world is not possible.16
Doctrine and Covenants 88:32 states that when mortal sons of perdition resurrect, they shall "return again to their own place."17 In this context, their own place refers to the final and permanent place for their resurrected bodies. The conditions in this final hell match the conditions of their temporary hell in the postmortal spirit world.18 However, the place of their temporary hell and the place of their final hell are not the same place. The temporary hell in the postmortal spirit world is on or within this earth.19 This cannot be the location of the final hell because the inward spirit world of this earth will be fully cleansed and sanctified from every kind of evil after the earth dies and is resurrected to celestial glory.20
The final destination for all sons of perdition is a place of endless misery and torment21 where there is no light or glory.22 It is called hell,23 outer darkness,24 and the lake of fire and brimstone.25 It is an actual physical place in uncreated space26 which God prepared no later than the time of the premortal grand council in heaven.27 God prepared this place of uncreated space as a final hell by withdrawing all his light and complete influence from that space.28 1 Nephi 15:35 states that the devil is the preparer of this awful hell, which means he is the cause of the miserable conditions in hell, but God remains the preparer of the actual place itself simply by the withdrawal of his spirit.29 He did not prepare outer darkness and hell as an act of creation.
Mortal sons of perdition will be resurrected30 last among all people31 after the telestial resurrection is complete at the end of the little season.32 Everyone in this last group will come forth from all ages of the earth in a single group33 when Michael sounds a fourth symbolic trump in Doctrine and Covenants 88:102.34 After their resurrection, these sons of perdition will stand before Christ in the flesh for their final judgment in Revelation 20:12.35 According to John's chronological account, their final judgment will occur after the earth dies with all its life forms36 in Revelation 20:11.37
Resurrected sons of perdition will have immortal bodies that will never physically die again,38 nor will they ever dissolve into their native element.39 However, their bodies will have no glory.40 The atonement of Christ redeems them physically‒but not spiritually to a condition of glory.41 They remain filthy still after their resurrection.42 They suffer the second death, which means it would have been better for them if they had never been born into mortality.43 Spiritually speaking, this means they are on an even par with the unembodied spirit sons of perdition who rebelled with Lucifer in the premortal existence and can never be born into mortality. Having a physical body is, of course, better than not having a body. However, an unglorified body after the resurrection becomes a tool of torment because it is a constant reminder of what could have been, and it cannot feel any of the mortal pleasures it once felt. When resurrected sons of perdition suffer the second death, they are cut off completely from any source of physical or spiritual joy. They receive no light or influence from God of any kind, and this because they sinned unto death during their mortal lives.44
