[§337] The Terrestrial Resurrection at the End of the Millennium
Both stages of the celestial resurrection‒which includes the morning and afternoon of the first resurrection‒will be complete at the end of the millennium.1 When both stages are complete, the evening of the first resurrection2 will immediately follow for all terrestrial-worthy people.3 Most people do not distinguish the two stages of the celestial resurrection4 and, therefore, refer to the terrestrial resurrection as the afternoon of the first resurrection5 rather than the evening.
Terrestrial-worthy people will be resurrected in one large group when the millennium ends,6 in the same way that one large group of people were resurrected with Christ in the meridian of time7 and a second large group will be resurrected just before the Second Coming.8 Only people resurrected to the celestial kingdom require gospel ordinances.9 Since terrestrial-worthy people do not require baptism or any other ordinance there is no impediment to their resurrection as a large group without ordinances of any kind.10 This can occur just as soon as the celestial resurrection is complete.11
Many people will be resurrected to the terrestrial kingdom after their disembodied spirits have spent thousands of years in the postmortal spirit prison.12 The spirits of some will spend much less time in the spirit world because they will live and die during the millennium.13 There may be a large number of terrestrial-worthy people on earth near the end of the millennium as wickedness increases with the onset of the little season that John describes in Revelation 20:3, and 7 to 8.14
Terrestrial people are those who may be baptized, but are not valiant in their testimony.15 They may be honorable people blinded by the craftiness of wicked people.16 All such people that are still alive at the end of the millennium will be resurrected with terrestrial bodies17 in the twinkling of an eye.18 They will be taken up from the paradisaical earth at the end of the millennium in the same way that exaltation-worthy people will be taken up from the telestial earth just before Christ's Second Coming if they are then living.19
When the end of the millennium approaches, millennial mortals then living will begin to reject Christ and the teachings of his gospel.20 This will usher in the little season of extreme wickedness.21 The little season will formally begin when all celestial and terrestrial worthy people of the first resurrection are resurrected and removed from the earth.22 This will leave only telestial-worthy people and sons of perdition to come forth in the second resurrection of the unjust23 after the battle of Gog and Magog takes place during the little season.24
Nephite history provides unique insights into the terrestrial resurrection and little season at the end of the millennium. When Christ visited the Nephites after his resurrection, they enjoyed nearly 200 years of peace and righteousness25 known as the golden age of the Nephites or their mini-millennium.26 However, the Nephites gradually became so wicked that the Three Nephites27 with translated (terrestrial) bodies28 were removed from among them.29 This mirrors the way in which all terrestrial people will be removed from the earth in one large group during the terrestrial resurrection at the end of the millennium and just before the little season of wickedness begins. When the righteous influence of the Three Nephites was gone from among the Nephites, the people became so utterly wicked that their entire civilization was destroyed no later than about 420 AD.30 This foreshadows the destruction of all telestial-worthy people and sons of perdition who will be the only people still alive during the little season.31 Ironically, the destruction of the Nephites came approximately 1000 years (a millennium) after the family of Lehi arrived in the promised land on the American continent.32
