[§175] Rev 11:8-10: The Bodies of the Two Witnesses Lie Unburied
Revelation 11:8: And their dead bodies shall lie in the street of the great city, which spiritually is called Sodom and Egypt, where also our Lord was crucified.
When the earthly agents of the Second Beast kill the Two Witnesses,1 their lifeless mortal bodies2 will remain unburied in the street as a gesture of contempt and dishonor.3 Some scholars identify this place of dishonor as Rome4 or mystical Babylon.5 However, Jerusalem is unmistakably identified as the great city6 where our Lord,7 Jesus Christ, was crucified.8 Jerusalem is spiritually9 called Sodom because it will be licentious and grossly wicked.10 It will be like Egypt for its idolatry and oppression.11 These names metaphorically describe the future conditions in Jerusalem at the time the Two Witnesses die.12
Revelation 11:9: And they of the people and kindreds and tongues and nations shall see their dead bodies three days and an half, and shall not suffer their dead bodies to be put in graves.
The world number four is used to identify all (1) people, (2) kindreds, (3) tongues, and (4) nations.13 These collective words describe a large portion of the world's population.14 With the aid of modern technology, people around the world will actually see15 the dead bodies of the Two Witnesses left unburied in Jerusalem.16 The testimony of the Two Witnesses will continue even in death17 because the wicked shall not suffer [allow] their dead bodies to be put in graves18 as a sign of hatred, anger, and contempt.19
Some scholars believe the 3½ days in Revelation 11:9 symbolically mean 3½ years.20 However, the dead bodies of the Two Witnesses will literally be unburied for just 3½ actual days.21
Revelation 11:10: And they that dwell upon the earth shall rejoice over them, and make merry, and shall send gifts one to another; because these two prophets tormented them that dwelt on the earth.
They that dwell upon the earth are the people, kindreds, tongues, and nations of the world mentioned in Revelation 11:9.22 Wicked people throughout the world will rejoice23 and make merry when the Two Witnesses die.24 The wicked will congratulate themselves with an exchange of gifts25 because of their apparent victory over the Two Witnesses26 and their apparent military conquest over Jerusalem.27
During their 3½ year ministry, the Two Witnesses will exercise the sealing power in and around Jerusalem only.28 However, their miracles and ministry will be known worldwide since wicked people worldwide will rejoice at their death.29 Mortals that dwell on earth30 and rejoice in the death of the Two Witnesses31 will be ripe in iniquity and ready for destruction.32
The wicked who rejoice in the death of the Two Witnesses are those who will no longer be tormented33 by the testimony of the Two Witnesses34 and the power of their plagues.35 Once the Two Witnesses are dead, evil will be virtually unchecked in Jerusalem until the Two Witnesses are resurrected 3½ days later.36 Zechariah 14 describes the horrors of this 3½ day Abomination of Desolation.37
