[§178] Rev 11:13-14: The Second Woe Ends with an Earthquake in Jerusalem

Revelation 11:13: And the same hour was there a great earthquake, and the tenth part of the city fell, and in the earthquake were slain of men seven thousand: and the remnant were affrighted, and gave glory to the God of heaven.

In the same hour1 that the Two Witnesses resurrect and ascend into heaven,2 there will literally3 be a great earthquake in Jerusalem.4 This earthquake will be a foreshock to the much larger earthquake described in Revelation 16:18,5 when Christ sets his foot on the mount of Olives at his Second Coming.6 These are distinct earthquakes,7 although some scholars identify them as the same event.8 The much larger earthquake in Revelation 16:18 will occur during the Third Woe and will result in the merger of entire continents.9 The very large earthquake of the Third Woe earthquake will occur just days after the great earthquake at the end of the Second Woe in Revelation 11:13.10

The foreshock earthquake in Revelation 11:13 begins the Lord's great judgments11 upon Satan's earthly kingdom,12 including the Second Beast from the abyss.13 This earthquake will cause a tenth part of the city of Jerusalem to collapse.14 The tenth part represents the initial collapse of Satan's kingdom. The number 10 symbolizes part of a whole.15 The foreshock earthquake is effectively a destructive tithe of one-tenth16 or one part of the whole destruction17 that won't be complete until the end of the Third Woe.18 This symbolism is consistent with the destruction of mortal sons of perdition as a class during Physical Armageddon.19 They are symbolically identified as one third of all the people gathered for this battle.20 The mortal sons of perdition, as a group of one third, are the symbolic equivalent of a tenth part of the city‒meaning one part of the whole kingdom of Satan. One part of the whole will be destroyed by the end of the Second Woe according to the predetermined Order of Destruction.21

The foreshock earthquake will also kill seven thousand men, which is a relatively small number in a modern city with a million residents.22 However, seven is a sacred symbol of totality and completeness.23 This number symbolically compliments the destruction of a tenth part of the whole city.24 The number seven multiplied by 1,000 represents a numerically large number.25 The 7,000 men also represent all the mortal sons of perdition that must collectively die as a group when the Second Woe comes to an end, leaving the unrepentant telestial-worthy people to die during the Third Woe.26

After the great earthquake in Revelation 11:13, a wicked remnant27 will remain to give glory to the God of heaven out of fear.28 Although, some righteous people will remain alive in Jerusalem to glorify God in a true form of worship,29 the remnant in Revelation 11:13 refers to wicked (telestial-worthy)30 people that refuse to repent.31 The resurrection of the Two Witnesses and the great earthquake may compel these wicked people to acknowledge32 the power of God,33 but their forced acknowledgment is not true repentance.34 Therefore, they will be destroyed in their order35 when Christ destroys the wicked remnant of telestial-worthy people during the Third Woe.36

Revelation 11:14: The second woe is past; and, behold, the third woe cometh quickly.

This verse identifies the end of the Second Woe (Physical Armageddon)37 that began in Revelation 9:13, when the sixth trumpet angel sounded his trumpet.38 The Second Woe will end at the time of the great earthquake described in Revelation 11:13.39

John is also told in this verse that the Third and final Woe40 cometh quickly without interruption or delay after the Second Woe is complete.41 The Third Woe will begin as the seventh and final trumpet angel sounds his trumpet.42 This Third Woe will be of very short duration as the last seven Vial Plagues will be poured out quickly before, and as part of, Christ's Second Coming.43 During this final period of the earth's cleansing, the wicked (telestial) people still living on earth as mortals after the Second Woe will be destroyed with fire.44 In addition, all disembodied spirit sons of perdition will be cast alive into the lake of fire during Spiritual Armageddon of the Third Woe in Revelation 19:20.45 All unembodied spirit sons of perdition will be bound in the bottomless pit for 1,000 years in Revelation 20:1-3.46
