[§27] Rev 2:24-25: The Burden of the Faithful Is to Hold Fast

Revelation 2:24: But unto you I say, and unto the rest in Thyatira, as many as have not this doctrine, and which have not known the depths of Satan, as they speak; I will put upon you none other burden.

In this verse, John addresses the rest of the church members in Thyatira1 that had not embraced Jezebel's doctrine.2 Her doctrine was a dogma3 the promoted fornication and idol worship.4 The rest in Thyatira were those that had not known (participated in)5 these depths of Satan which were also called the mysteries6 by a cancerous group of heretics within the church called the Gnostics.7 They referred to the mysteries of fornication and idol worship as the depths of God,8 as they speak.9 However, the Lord calls such mysteries10 the depths of Satan.11 The Gnostics so completely perverted the worship of God that their worship had become the worship of Satan in a very literal sense.12

Christ gave the few faithful saints that remained in Thyatira just one burden.13 They were to rid themselves of false doctrine from within the church14 and keep themselves free from fornication and idolatry.15 Their faithfulness would not end persecution and trials,16 but they would not be subject to the other burden17 of spiritual death that comes to the wicked.18

Revelation 2:25: But that which ye have already hold fast till I come.

The faithful saints in Thyatira were admonished to hold fast to the truth they already possessed.19 They had to endure to the end20 against corrupting philosophies21 and the so-called mysteries of worldly paganism22 to qualify themselves for exaltation in the heavenly kingdom of God.23

Christ told the faithful saints to hold fast till I come.24 These words frequently refer to Christ's Second Coming.25 However, as of the time of John's vision in 96 AD, the Second Coming was more than 1900 years away. Therefore, these words admonish the Thyatiran saints to hold fast until Christ comes to them in their individual lives or in their death.26 Christ can come to the righteous as the Second Comforter27 when they make their calling and election sure in this life.28 Generally, however, those that endure to the end and are worthy of exaltation receive the Second Comforter when they die.29 Their spirits enter paradise in the postmortal spirit world,30 where they enjoy the comforting presence of the Father and the Son31 until the time of their glorious resurrection at the Second Coming.32
