[§295] Rev 18:1-3: The Spiritual Fall of the Great Whore [Modern Babylon]
Revelation 18:1: And after these things I saw another angel come down from heaven, having great power; and the earth was lightened with his glory.
In Revelation 17:1, an angel promised to show John the judgment of the Great Whore of false religion.1 The Great Whore is the false religion of Modern Babylon, so Christ's judgment on the Great Whore is also symbolically equivalent to the destruction of Modern Babylon at the Second Coming.2 In Revelation 17, John both saw and heard the historical evolution of the Great Whore from the time she was a symbolic woman of false religion that rode on the bloody scarlet coloured beast that represented the Roman Empire in the first century AD.3 After the angel explained to John the complete evolution of this symbolic woman into the Great Whore of the latter days, the angel then describes her complete destruction in Revelation chapter 18 without pause or interruption from his prior vision.4
Therefore, after these things in Revelation chapter 17,5 John saw another angel come down from heaven.6 This other angel is Jesus Christ.7 His identity is made certain because he comes down from heaven having great power (authority)8 and the earth is lightened with his glory.9 This description of Christ is very similar to the description of Christ in Revelation 10:1,10 which also describes Christ as a "mighty angel come down from heaven."11 The two descriptions are similar because Revelation 10:1 and Revelation 18:1 both describe Christ's appearance for his coronation as King of kings at Adam-ondi-Ahman.12
When Christ is coronated at Adam-ondi-Ahman his power on earth will rise,13 and the power of Modern Babylon will correspondingly fall.14 In Revelation 10:1-7, John described the rise of Christ's power and kingdom, and, in Revelation 18:1-3, John describes the corresponding spiritual fall of Modern Babylon.15 They are the same event from two different perspectives.
Christ will be coronated King of kings and Lord of lords at Adam-ondi-Ahman.16 However, his political rule on earth over all earthly nations will not begin until 3½ years later at the Second Coming.17 At that time, he will make a full end of all nations and earthly kingdoms.18 This will occur during the Third Woe of the seventh seal,19 which John describes as the physical fall of Babylon in Revelation 18:4-24.20
Revelation 18:2: And he cried mightily with a strong voice, saying, Babylon the great is fallen, is fallen, and is become the habitation of devils, and the hold of every foul spirit, and a cage of every unclean and hateful bird.
At Adam-ondi-Ahman, Christ will cry mightily with a strong voice,21 saying, Babylon the great is fallen, is fallen.22 An angel announced this spiritual fall in Revelation 14:8, but the details of the actual event are given here.23 In Revelation 18:2, Christ declares that Babylon is fallen is fallen (twice) because Babylon will actually fall twice.24 Modern Babylon will fall spiritually when the gathering at Adam-ondi-Ahman occurs and Christ begins to exercise his regal power on earth against the kingdom of Satan.25 Modern Babylon will suddenly fall physically 3½ years later at the Second Coming.26 Both falls are so certain to occur in the future that In Revelation 18:2, Christ speaks to John in the prophetic present tense.27
Modern Babylon represents every form of evil and wickedness28 in the world.29 When Modern Babylon falls spiritually at the time of Adam-ondi-Ahman, the world will then become the habitation of devils, and the hold of every foul spirit and a cage of every unclean and hateful bird.30 Many scholars believe these words describe Babylon's physical fall and complete destruction at the Second Coming.31 However, the physical fall occurs in Revelation 18:8, when the plagues of the Third Woe utterly and literally burn Babylon in one day, leaving no habitation of any kind for devils or any foul spirit.32 Since there remains a habitation of devils, and the hold of every foul spirit and a cage of every unclean and hateful bird in Revelation 18:1, this verse must be describing the spiritual fall of Babylon 3½ years before the Second Coming rather than the physical fall of Modern Babylon at the Second Coming.
The earth will still be the habitation of devils after Modern Babylon falls spiritually during the gathering of saints at Adam-ondi-Ahman.33 The habitation of devils refers to the unembodied and disembodied spirit sons of perdition (devils)34 that will still have tremendous power on earth for another 3½ years during the Great Tribulation.35 They will only cease to have their habitation on earth during the Third Woe when all disembodied spirit sons of perdition are cast into the lake of fire permanently in Revelation 19:20, and all unembodied spirits sons of perdition are cast into the bottomless pit for the duration of the 1000-year millennium in Revelation 20:1-3.36
Similarly, after Babylon's spiritual fall, the earth will become the hold of every foul spirit37 and a cage of every unclean and hateful bird.38 This describes the devils and their earthly habitation, including the devils loosed on earth like a swarm of locusts during the First Woe in Revelation 9:1-3.39 All these evil spirits will still be on the earth throughout the Great Tribulation of the last 3½ years, but their powers will be limited and curtailed as though they were held in a cage. In other words, after the gathering at Adam-ondi-Ahman‒which is the spiritual fall of Modern Babylon‒the evil spirits on earth will begin to lose the great power given to them during the First Woe. Their earthly habitation will become like a desolate40 place of confinement41 with prison-like limits that cannot be exceeded.42 For example, evil spirits and mortal agents of Satan will be limited in their power by the Two Witnesses in Old Jerusalem who will exercise the sealing power against such enemies for 3½ years during the Great Tribulation.43 During this same time period, the devils, every foul spirit and hateful bird will have no power at all over the saints in Zion (New Jerusalem, Missouri).44
Revelation 18:3: For all nations have drunk of the wine of the wrath of her fornication, and the kings of the earth have committed fornication with her, and the merchants of the earth are waxed rich through the abundance of her delicacies.
Modern Babylon, which includes the Great Whore,45 will fall both spiritually and physically as a judgment upon her.46 Wicked people that are part of Modern Babylon will suffer her same judgments.47 Her destruction is assured for the three reasons given by John in Revelation 18:3.48 First, Modern Babylon will be destroyed because all nations have drunk of the wine of the wrath of her fornication.49 Their spiritual drunkenness has aroused them to a furious50 state of evil intoxication.51 For this cause Modern Babylon must pay.
Second, the kings of the earth have committed fornication with her,52 which is a deep and sensual worship of false gods53 and modern idols of every kind in the latter days.54 This cannot be condoned.
Third, and finally, Babylon's fall is assured because the merchants of the earth are waxed rich through the abundance of her delicacies.55 This means the worldly goods of Modern Babylon have become a foolish obsession that have made merchants excessively rich.56 The abundant delicacies of Modern Babylon are actually worthless objects that have become the true objects of false worship in Modern Babylon.57 For these reasons, Babylon must fall both spiritually and physically.
