[§126] Rev 9:20-21: Armageddon’s Telestial Survivors Fail to Repent

Revelation 9:20-21: And the rest of the men which were not killed by these plagues yet repented not of the works of their hands, that they should not worship devils, and idols of gold, and silver, and brass, and stone, and of wood: which neither can see, nor hear, nor walk: Neither repented they of their murders, nor of their sorceries, nor of their fornication, nor of their thefts.

The third part of men will die during Physical Armageddon of the Second Woe, including all mortal sons of perdition.1 Mortal sons of perdition are those that commit the unpardonable sin2 for which there is no forgiveness in this life or the next.3 Revelation 9:20 describes the class of wicked people that will survive Physical Armageddon, as the rest of the men which [are] not killed,4 who can still repent and be forgiven because they live at least telestial law.5 This telestial remnant will be spared from death (collectively) until the plagues of the Third Woe.6 Forgiveness is still possible for these persons,7 even though the plagues of the Second Woe will not persuade them8 to repent.9 They will be past feeling, as the Nephites and Jaredites were at the time of their genocidal destruction on the American continent.10

John explains that the wickedness of these telestial survivors11 will include the worship of devils12 or demons (the dead)13 and the adoration of false gods.14 Telestial people are those that worship lifeless idols15 contrary to God's most fundamental commandments.16 Idols are worldly and manmade objects17 of gold, and silver, and brass, and stone, and of wood.18 Such idols are worshipped like gods, but they are less powerful than their makers for these material objects and idols cannot see, hear, walk, or talk.19

In addition to the idolatrous devil worshipers in Revelation 9:20, John identifies four classes of surviving sinners in Revelation 9:21 that correspond exactly with four classes of telestial people described in Doctrine and Covenants Section 76:103-104.20 The four types of telestial people include murderers,21 sorcerers,22 fornicators,23 and thieves.24 These types of sin are prevalent today.25 They are four in number to express their universal presence throughout the world.26

The telestial people that survive Physical Armageddon during the Second Woe will face even worse plagues during the Third Woe27 because they fail to repent in the face of God's unmistakable judgments during the Second Woe.28 These surviving sinners love darkness rather than light.29 Christ will destroy these remaining telestial-worthy people by the brightness of his coming30 after the Third Woe begins.31 This necessarily implies that those who live above telestial law (i.e., terrestrial or celestial) will also survive as a group beyond the Second Woe. Indeed, some people that live terrestrial law‒the honorable people of the earth‒will also survive the Third Woe to live as millennial mortals after the Second Coming with others who live celestial law.32

And I saw another mighty angel come down from heaven, clothed with a cloud.... And he had in his hand a little book open.
