[§252] The Third Woe Begins When All Things Are in Commotion
The harvest of exaltation-worthy saints in Revelation 14:15-16 will begin when the Two Witnesses are resurrected in Jerusalem.1 After the harvest of exaltation-worthy saints during the morning of the first resurrection, the last of all mortal sons of perdition will be harvested in Revelation 14:17-20.2 This will occur as the Second Woe of Physical Armageddon comes to an end.3 This will leave telestial-worthy people to be destroyed and burned4 during the Third and last Woe of the seventh seal.5 Revelation 11:14 states that the Third Woe will come quickly after the Second Woe ends.6 This means there will be no pause in John's chronological vision between the end of the vision in Revelation chapter 14 and his continuing vision in Revelation chapter 15.
The Third Woe begins in Revelation 15:1 as the grand sign of the Son of Man is given in heaven and seen on earth.7 This Grand Sign will come when all things shall be in commotion as predicted in Doctrine and Covenants Section 88:91 and 93.8 There will be commotion in the earth and sky;9 spiritual, mental, and emotional commotion in the hearts of all people;10 and the commotion of conflict between worldly people and warring nations.11 Commotion is already an increasingly prevalent sign of the times in the world today12 and in the hearts of fearful people.13 The Parable of the Fig Tree depicts this latter-day commotion, when the summer winds shake the tree and cause the matured leaves to fall suddenly.14 The signs of the times increasingly show that the harvest of souls at the end of the Second Woe is close at hand.15
Physical and spiritual commotions will rapidly worsen during the brief period of the Third Woe and at Christ's Second Coming.16 Joseph Smith described the latter-day commotions leading to the Third Woe, saying: "There will be wars and rumors of wars, signs in the heavens above and on the earth beneath, the sun turned into darkness and the moon to blood, earthquakes in divers places, the seas heaving beyond their bounds; then will appear one grand sign of the Son of Man in heaven."17
Many heavenly signs were given when Christ was born,18 and many physical disasters and calamities occurred on earth when he died.19 These signs and calamities foreshadow the conditions that will exist when the Grand Sign appears at the start of the Third Woe.20 Some signs and calamities will come from the physical battle of Armageddon that will be nearing its climax when the Grand Sign appears.21 For example, dense smoke from Armageddon may contribute22 to the conditions where the sun becomes dark and the moon symbolically turns to blood.23 Heavenly signs may also be caused by dust from the massive earthquake24 that will occur in the same hour that the Second Woe ends.25
Worldwide commotion26 and physical disasters will be extremely intense27 during the Third Woe because the last Seven Vial Plagues will occur during that Woe in rapid and almost simultaneous succession. The time for the period for the Third Woe will be measured in days, and Vial Plagues may occur within hours of each other.28
