[§288] Rev 17:10: Seven Earthly Kings Before the Second Coming
Revelation 17:10: And there are seven kings: five are fallen, and one is, and the other is not yet come; and when he cometh, he must continue a short space.
In Revelation 17:9, the seven heads of the First Beast represent the seven hills or mountains on which ancient Rome was built.1 However, the same seven heads dualistically symbolize2 seven kings.3 The seven kings represent seven worldly kingdoms4 that oppose God's covenant people,5 which is the house of Israel.6 Some scholars mistakenly believe that the seven kings are seven forms of Roman government7 or seven emperors within the Roman Empire.8 John's panoramic vision, however, extends to world empires and kingdoms before, during, and after the Roman Empire.
Among the seven kingdoms, five are fallen as of the time of John's vision in 96 AD.9 The five fallen kingdoms include Egypt, Assyria, Babylon, Medo-Persia, and Greece.10 These five empires were all wicked enemies of God's covenant people.11
Egypt was the first and oldest kingdom of mankind on earth12 after the flood.13 Ancient Egypt included the kingdom of Nimrod.14 He was Noah's great grandson through Cush,15 a son of Ham and Egyptus.16 Nimrod's kingdom was Egyptian and he was an Egyptian Pharaoh.17 He was the predecessor of the Egyptian Pharaoh in the days of Moses.18 Nimrod may have been the same Pharaoh whose priest sought to kill Abraham19 at the Ur of Chaldea.20 Nimrod was a mighty hunter against the Lord21 when he established his mighty22 and idolatrous kingdom.23 His Asiatic kingdom included lands that would later become part of the Assyrian, Babylonian, Medo-Persian, and Greek empires.24
The Roman Empire became the sixth kingdom identified by John25 after the Romans overthrew the fifth Greek Empire.26 Rome was still the ruling empire at the time of John's vision in 96 AD.27 Imperial Rome fell in 476 AD,28 but this sixth kingdom still endured after Rome fell because the emerging nations of Europe29 subjected themselves to the popes and papal power in the Holy Roman Empire30 until the time of the Reformation.31 John saw and described this sixth kingdom as the First Beast in Revelation 13:1-8, which rose to fight against the saints from Christ's ancient church in 70 AD.32 John's angelic guide described this sixth kingdom as a scarlet coloured beast in Revelation 17:3-4.33 Daniel described this sixth kingdom as the fourth dreadful beast in Daniel chapter 7.34 Nephi called this sixth kingdom the "great and abominable church" in 1 Nephi 13.35
The seventh king or kingdom was not yet come at the time of John's vision in 96 AD.36 Few scholars correctly interpret this seventh kingdom,37 which began to emerge after the Reformation stripped the Holy Roman Empire or sixth kingdom of its secular power.38 Daniel described the seventh kingdom as a little horn that grew from among ten horns which are the modern nations on the head of the dreadful and terrible beast that represented the Roman Empire‒both Imperial and Papal.39 The little horn began to emerge no later than 1830, when the restored Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints also emerged40 as the kingdom of God on earth.41 The restored church and latter-day kingdom of God is the antithesis of Satan's seventh worldly kingdom.42 John identified this seventh kingdom as the Second Beast in Revelation 13:11-18.43 1 Nephi 14:9 calls it "the mother of abominations, whose founder is the devil."44 God's restored church and kingdom exists in complete opposition45 to Satan's seventh earthly kingdom of the latter days.46 Daniel prophesied that God's latter-day kingdom will overcome Satan's seventh kingdom as a stone cut out of the mountain without hands that will fill the whole earth and break in pieces and consume all other kingdoms.47
According to Revelation 17:10, the seventh worldly kingdom of Satan in the modern age will only continue a short space48 from 1830 until the Second Coming.49 However, Satan's greatest power on earth will also exist in this short space of time,50 especially when evil spirits ascend from the bottomless pit to spread spiritual darkness on the earth during the First Woe in Revelation 9:1-3.51 The modern nations are part of this seventh kingdom and they are already of one mind with the Great Whore of false religion.52 She rules over them53 and 1 Nephi 14:13 states that she has power to "gather together multitudes upon the face of all the earth, among all the nations of the Gentiles, to fight against the Lamb of God."54 Ultimately, the seventh kingdom, which is also called Babylon the Great and Modern Babylon,55 will fall in a single day during the Third Woe at the Second Coming.56
