[§104] Rev 8:7: The First Angel’s Plague upon the Land
Revelation 8:7: The first angel sounded, and there followed hail and fire mingled with blood, and they were cast upon the earth: and the third part of trees was burnt up, and all green grass was burnt up.
The first trumpet angel of the seventh seal will unleash hail and fire mingled with blood1 (in blood).2 This bloody hail and fire will be cast down with great force3 upon the earth.4 It is similar to seventh plague of Egypt,5 when the worst hail storm in Egyptian history brought hail, and fire mingled with the hail.6 Since then, hail has been a symbol of the Lord's divine punishment.7 The Lord has frequently used hail to punish the wicked.8 In these latter-days, the Lord used hail to disperse a Missouri mob assembled against Zion's Camp in June, 1834.9
In Revelation 8:7, the first trumpet plague of hail and fire is also mingled with blood, suggesting that it will be more deadly than the seventh plague of Egypt, which did not include the element of blood.10 The fire mingled with hail could be lightning11 or other conditions that could cause fire to literally rain down from heaven with the hail.12 The blood mingled with hail is probably not actual blood, but represents the literal death and carnage associated with the plague.13 Historical precedent actually exists for red precipitation in the form of red rain and red snow from natural causes based on accounts from the early 1800's.14
The first plague of the seventh seal will bring judgment upon a third of the earth (land).15 Fires on a global scale16 will literally17 burn the third of trees and all green grass18 on a worldwide scale.19 Such destruction will be disastrous to the agricultural industry.20 Worldwide food shortages will likely occur.21 People will turn to violence and anarchy as food supplies dwindle.22 The blood that accompanies the crop-destroying hail and fire could symbolically represent the bloodshed of people that turn on each other during this time of panic and civil unrest.23
