[§103] The First Group of Four Plagues in the Seventh Seal
The seventh seal consists of seven trumpet plagues arranged in one group of four and a second group of Three Woes.1 They share the same pattern as the seven seals, which are similarly arranged in groups of four and three (4x3).2 The first four seals of one-thousand years each are historical seals before the birth of Christ. They are represented by the four horsemen of the Apocalypse.3 The last three seals of one-thousand years each are the prophetic seals that come after the birth of Christ. They are represented by a variety of symbols.4 The seven Vial Plagues in Revelation chapter 16 follow the same pattern or grouping of four and three (4x3).5
There are significant differences in the types of destruction caused by the seven trumpet plagues of the seventh seal. For example, the first four trumpet plagues (in the 4x3 grouping) consist of a sequential series of disasters that overlap6 and occur in rapid succession.7 They primarily target the earth and the resources of the earth such that both good and bad people are equally afflicted by the effects of the first four trumpet plagues.8 They are four in number to represent the worldwide scope of their geographical reach.9
The last three trumpet plagues (Three Woes),10 by contrast, represent increasingly severe judgments directed at wicked people and evil spirits that are part of Satan's kingdom.11 The First Woe lasts for five months during a time of tremendous spiritual darkness and spiritual torment upon the earth.12 The Second Woe is physical Armageddon which lasts for seven years.13 The Third Woe is very short, but is also the most devastating of all the plagues because it includes the seven Vial Plagues that John describes with great detail in Revelation chapters 16 to 19.14
The first four plagues will be unleashed by four trumpet angels as recorded in Revelation 8:7-12.15 The first four trumpet angels may be the same four angels from Revelation 7:1 that had power to hold at bay the four winds of destruction.16 The plagues of these four angels were delayed during the sixth seal because Elias, the angel from the east,17 told the four destroyers not to hurt the earth until the 144,000 Servants receive the seal of the living God in their foreheads.18 This indicates that the first four trumpet plagues will commence in earnest only after the sealing process of the 144,000 Servants has been sufficiently accomplished during the period of the sixth seal.19 Once the plagues of the first four trumpet angels begin during the seventh seal, they will proceed much like the plagues of Egypt in the time of Moses.20 The Egyptian plagues were literal events,21 and the four plagues in Revelation chapter 8 will also be literal.22
The four trumpet plagues in Revelation chapter 8 will occur worldwide,23 but the destruction is consistently limited to the fractional share of one third.24 This means that God's destructive judgments will not be full or complete during the first four trumpet plagues.25 Since the judgments are limited, the wicked will have a final opportunity to repent before the judgments of the Three Woes destroy those that fail to do so.26 Unfortunately, most people will not repent because they will ignore and/or rationalize the limited physical calamities that occur during the first four trumpet plagues.27
The fractional share of one third in each of the first four trumpet plagues is not unique. The same fraction appears in multiple contexts. For example, in the premortal existence one third of all God's spirit children rebelled with Lucifer and became unembodied sons of perdition.28 There are three kingdoms of glory29 and, when the earth is made new at the Second Coming,30 no one from the third and lowest telestial kingdom will survive.31 In other words, one third part of the three kingdoms of glory cannot abide the day.32 In Revelation 9:18, one third of the mortal combatants in the battle of Armageddon will be destroyed. This fractional share refers to mortal sons of perdition.33 In all these illustrations, the one third fraction is an evil part of some whole as an expression of quality, rather than a numerical part of some whole as an expression of quantity.
